Rafael MONLÉON Y TORRES (SPANISH, 1843-1900)
The Spanish protected cruiser 'Reina Regente' off Dover

Built by J.G. Thomson & Co. in 1887, Reina Regente was the nameship of a Class of three, the other two (Alfonso XIII and Lepanto) being built in European yards up to five years later. Displacing 4,725 tons, she could achieve 18½ knots, required 400 crew to man her and and was armed with four 7.9in. guns, six 4.7in. guns, six 6-pdr quick firing machine guns, six Nordenfelt machine guns and five torpedo tubes. In 1895 she disappeared with all hands in a storm probably in the Gulf of Cadiz and the wreck has yet to be found.

Provenance: J. G. Thomson & Co, Shipbuilding, Glasgow, given to David Moor, Naval Architect, on yard's closure.
