Sir John Pennington (1568-1646) held a series of high-profile naval appointments in a life-long naval career that began in obscurity. By 1617 he served as a vice admiral under Sir Walter Raleigh (in the Orinoco expedition) and ended as Lord High Admiral to Charles I, albeit one without a fleet to command as it was controlled by Parliament by this stage of the Civil War. It is thought he died when Bristol was stormed by Fairfax.
