A BASSETT-LOWKE CASED SET OF 50':1" SCALE WARTIME ISSUE WATERLINE RECOGNITION MODELS
for H.M. Ships Illustrious; King George V; Nigeria; an 'L' Class destroyer and 'T' Class submarine, each secured to painted blue base with card plaque and maker's label, contained within glazed wooden case. Overall measurements -- 6½ x 19¼ x 15¼in. (16.5 x 49 x 38.5cm.); together with a copy of Derek Head's book Bassett-Lowke Waterline Ship Models, Golden Age Editions, 1996
(2)

Provenance: Derek Head Collection.
Literature: Head, D: Bassett-Lowke Waterline Ship Models, Golden Age Editions, 1996

On page 32 of his book, Derek Head describes seeing these cased sets at several RN bases during the war where they were used for study purposes, sometimes locked away, and sometimes left in a reception area on display. The set was also advertised in post-War brochures for the company, although the later models had deliberate errors introduced presumably to preserve the technical data of vessels which were still in use. This lot is photographed on page 51, but the submarine has since been added.

Sold for £3,100
Estimated at £1,800 - £2,500
