[M] A 1½IN. 'DUMPY' LEVEL BY TROUGHTON & SIMMS,...

A 1½IN. 'DUMPY' LEVEL BY TROUGHTON & SIMMS, LONDON, C.1840
the telescope signed as per title with bubble level over, secured to adjustable platform with compass and contained in original fitted mahogany box with later retail label for 'Clarksons' dated 1933 -- 19in. (48cm.) diameter; together with a monocular microscope signed E. Leitz, Wetzlar No. 72059, with two nozzles (4 & 7), contained within fitted box -- 13in. (33cm.) high
(2)

The dumpy level was developed in the 1830s by William Gravatt in response to an urgent need for simple, reliable levels caused by the railway building boom. Troughton and Simms were quick to respond in kind and produced several models. That this was retailed second hand as late as 1933 is a testament to the enduring quality of build and design.
