A LAUNCHING MALLET AND PAINTING FOR THE 2ND CLASS CRUISER H.M.S. PHAETON, 1883

the boxwood mallet carved with crown and fouled anchor devices, inscribed under HMS Phaeton 27th FEBy 1883, barley twist handle and brass terminals (repaired crack under head) -- 11½in. (29cm.) high; together with a Neopolitan gouache of Phaeton dated 1883 -- 10 x 16½in. (25.5 x 42cm.)

Built by Napier, Glasgow, Phaeton was a 4,300 ton Second Class protected cruiser of the Leander Class. Commissioned at Chatham, she served on the Malta and Pacific Stations before being decommissioned in 1903 and serving as a training ship initially for stokers and seamen, and then from 1913 as the Indefatigable for a naval charity. She was however re-purchased by the Royal Navy in 1941 and used as an accommodation ship for the duration of hostilities. She was finally sold and sent for breaking at Wards in 1947. Earlier in her career she formed part of Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon's squadron and witnessed his flagship Victoria being rammed and sunk by Camperdown during maneuvers off Tripoli in 1893.
