[M] AN INTERESTING 19TH-CENTURY WOOD AND BRASS...

AN INTERESTING 19TH-CENTURY WOOD AND BRASS MODEL NAVAL CANNON
with four-stage tapering brass ¾in. barrel with inset touch hole, mounted on stepped mahogany truck with sliding plate with locks operated by universal side levers via front axle, inset brass securing points, brass wheels -- 6½ x 14in. (16.5 x 35.5cm.)

The front of the sliding plate is designed to be secured to the bulkhead and is shaped to allow a certain amount of lateral movement. It also does away with the traditional ropes which cannon had in order to arrest recoil. Presumably once the locks were released, the cannon could simply be slid back to position.

Sold for £2,232
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,500

(inc. buyer's premium of 24%)

Condition Report
Fine overall condition with attractive patination. Touch hole may be a replacement/old repair, although the barrel shows no sign of use so seems likely to be a modeller's correction. The barrel is bored and drilled so could, theoretically be fired.
